This has been a great week for both basketball players and coaches. Congratulations to Mr. Horston for winning United League Coach of the Year! Here is his response to getting the achievement.
"What I did was a small part of our success this season. The girls put in work and they bought into my system of hard work and commitment. I didn't score 1 basket this season so I owe my award to the players who fought for me on the court.
After being notified that I was the United League COY, my 1st feeling was elated about the achievement; however, I felt like 1 of my players was slighted on the All-League honors so that kinda took away from my excitement. Individual awards are great but my team is why I won, we had the Player of the Year and one 1st team selection. I felt like we should have had another player on the 2nd team; so happy but disappointed at the same time."
This achievement also gains him praise from fellow staff members like Mr. Tate, who says "Not only has improved the girls program but has increased the numbers. I admire his dedication to the school and the basketball program."
Let's also congratulate our girls and boy's basketball teams for their accomplishments! In the words of Mr. Tate "The varsity boys showed toughness against New Hope, which I have been waiting for all year. Our seniors Solaiman Jalloh, Roland Kargbo, and Khiryn McNeal led us to victory. I told the guys we can't lose games in February and they stepped up to the challenge. Hopefully, we can make a run in tournaments."
And from Mr. Edwards on the boy's basketball win last night February 8, "Tonight the boy's basketball team clinched the United League Championship for the second time in two years. Congratulations to Coach Tate, his staff, and our student-athletes for making this possible. This is what makes all the long trips, late nights, and lack of sleep all worthwhile. This is the 3rd championship so far this year, prior to this year we had four total United League championships. Needlessly to say this has been our most successful year so far. Have a great night and Go Hawks!!!"
Big shout out to senior Hawa Ba for being named conference player of the year! "Hawa Ba has improved not only as a player but as a leader. She deserves this honor!" Mr. Tate responds to her achievement. Let us congratulate Mr. Horston and the girls' basketball team for winning the game on February 1st against Cristo Rey they clinched their first United League championship in girls' basketball! as well as the boys' basketball team defeated Patriot Prep for the second time this year!
"What I would like to say to the basketball players is that I am so proud of their accomplishments and the gains that they have made in my short stint as the coach. I just want to relay the importance of making a commitment, honoring that commitment, and holding themselves accountable. Lastly, I would like to express the synergy of teamwork and how working together makes everyone better and any task accomplishable." Mr. Horston says. And finally congrats to Coach Tate for beating New Hope tonight by 9. This year has been our most successful one so far with 3 league championships to date. GO HAWKS!!!
